Menaechmi Introductory Note The Menaechmi, being the basis of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, occupies an important position in English studies. But while the basis of Shakespeare’s play is thus well known, it is unclear who wrote Plautus’ Greek original. It has been said that it might be Posidippus, because like him the two main characters are originally from Sicily; but that is no more than speculation. It is completely unclear what the Greek original was called or when it was first staged.

It seems that the passage in the Menaechmi is a nonliteral quotation of the well-known passage in the Mostellaria, which gives us the relative chronology of the two plays.
